Installation

A complete install. No surprises.

Most Metrowest homes run on a 40, 50, or 75 gallon tank-style heater fueled by natural gas, propane, or oil. We install all three sizes in A.O. Smith and Rheem — both reliable brands with parts that are easy to source years down the road. For homes with bigger demand, multiple bathrooms, or a desire to free up basement space, see our dedicated tankless water heater page.

We size every installation to your actual hot-water load — not a guess from a sales chart. Undersized heaters get cold showers; oversized heaters waste fuel and money. We'll ask about how many bathrooms run at once, whether you have a soaking tub, and whether anyone in the house takes a long shower in the morning. Then we recommend the right BTU and gallon count for your home.

Every install is turnkey: we arrive with the right unit on the truck, drain and remove the old heater, refit gas and water connections, vent to current Massachusetts code, install an expansion tank and isolation valves where required, pressure-test, and walk you through the new system. The town permit is pulled in your name and inspection scheduled.

Common signs you need a new water heater

Repair

We figure out what's wrong. Then we tell you straight.

Most water heater calls fall into a handful of patterns: a part failed, sediment built up over years, a vent or supply got disturbed, or the tank itself rusted through. We come out, look it over, identify the issue, and lay out your options — fix it, or replace it if that's the smarter call.

For tank heaters we routinely repair gas valves, thermocouples, igniters, T&P relief valves, drain valves, anode rods, dip tubes, and venting connections. For tankless we repair flame sensors, ignition modules, condensate paths, scale-related error codes, isolation valves, and venting.

Our truck stocks parts for the brands we install most — A.O. Smith, Rheem, Navien — so the most common repairs happen on the first visit. If a part needs ordering we cap and stabilize the failure, restore safe service to the rest of the house, and return promptly.

Repair vs. replace — how we decide

Brands we install & service

Brands we stand behind.

We chose these brands because they are reliable, parts are easy to source, and we can stand behind the install for years. We service every brand we install — and a lot of brands we don't — but new installs default to the lineup above.

Our process

From dead heater to hot showers.

Step 01

Symptom triage

We talk through symptoms by phone and rule out simple causes (tripped breaker, closed gas valve) before rolling a truck.

Step 02

Site visit & quote

For installs, we measure space, check fuel and venting, and provide a flat written quote by the next business day.

Step 03

Permit & install

We pull the permit, install or repair, vent to code, pressure-test, and walk you through the new unit.

Step 04

Stand behind it

Workmanship guaranteed. If anything we touched leaks or fails, we're back to fix it — full stop.

FAQ

Water heater questions, answered.

How long does a typical water heater last in Massachusetts?
A standard 40-50 gallon tank usually lasts 8–12 years in Metrowest MA. Hard or mineral-heavy water can shorten that — homes on well water in Sherborn, Dover, or Wayland often see scale buildup that ages the unit faster.
My water heater is leaking — can it be repaired?
It depends on where the leak is. Leaks at fittings, the temperature/pressure relief valve, or a drain valve are usually repairable. A leak from the tank itself almost always means the inner tank is rusted through and replacement is the only safe option.
Should I repair or replace my water heater?
If the unit is over 10 years old and the repair is significant (gas valve, control board, anode replacement), replacement is usually the better economic choice. Under 8 years, repair almost always wins. We'll give you the math, not a sales pitch.
How long does a water heater install take?
Most straightforward tank-to-tank replacements take 3–4 hours. Tankless installs run 6–8 hours when gas and venting need adjustment. Heat-pump units add electrical work that may extend the day. We schedule with realistic timing, not a sales-call promise.
Should I replace my water heater with tankless?
Sometimes. Tankless units last longer, save space, and never run out of hot water — but they cost more upfront and require correctly sized gas and venting. We will tell you honestly whether your house is a good tankless candidate or whether a high-efficiency tank is a better fit.
What brands do you install?
For tank heaters we install A.O. Smith and Rheem. For tankless we install Navien primarily, with Rinnai and Rheem as alternatives. We chose these because they're reliable, parts are easy to source, and we can stand behind the install for years.
Can you install a heat-pump water heater?
Yes. Heat-pump water heaters are increasingly popular in Massachusetts thanks to Mass Save rebates. We can spec, install, and connect to existing electrical — and explain whether your basement is a good fit.
Can you switch from oil to gas water heating?
Yes — when gas service is available to the property. We run the new gas line, install the new unit, vent it correctly, and decommission the old oil-fired tank. Permits are pulled for both gas and plumbing portions.
How fast can you get to a no-hot-water call?
Most no-hot-water calls in Metrowest are scheduled same-day or next morning. Winter calls — when the loss of hot water is most painful — get priority dispatch.
Do you handle the permit and Mass Save rebates?
Yes. Water heater installations in Massachusetts require a plumbing permit. We pull the permit, schedule inspection, and document model numbers and installation details so you can submit for Mass Save rebates and federal tax credits where the unit qualifies (heat-pump and high-efficiency tankless typically do).
